A theatrical laboratory - a performance by B.A. Creative Industries Management
During the Performing Arts module at SRH Berlin School of Popular Arts, students of the B.A. Creative Industries Management discover their artistic abilities to the fullest in a Theatrical Laboratory. Through to the artistic mentoring of Sandy Schwermer, they explore the qualities of the so called homo ludens, the man who plays, as a participatory way of processing and proceeding in the creative process.
In the summer semester 2020, the students’ work was inspired by and based on the theatrical techniques of Bertolt Brecht and his play “The Good Person of Szechwan”. They focused on the “Verfremdungseffekt”, an approach which aims at distancing the audience from the plot and the emotions of the characters by constantly reminding them that they are watching a theatre play. There, he served as the Head of the Properties Department for over a year. In that department, he served as Property Master for his Junior and Senior years for seven shows. He also dedicated his time and knowledge to five other productions. After earning his degree, he hopes to take his love of creation ...

In this way, the public can critically reflect on the meaning behind a piece of art.
Considering the current situation, the Alienation effect is particularly relevant. We all find ourselves in a unique situation where we are forced to be alienated from our day-to-day practices. We cannot freely go to an office, a bar or a restaurant. We have to communicate through screens with our peers, and manage to establish real relationships with unreal communication methods. Throughout the performance the students touched upon current themes of social distance and estrangement.
Created by Sandy Schwermer, Eleonora Gelmetti, Raquel Galdudo and Arsenii Efremenko.

Theatre Arts and STEM are typically considered to be alternate ends of the career path spectrum due to the nature of the product delivered. But are these two "polar opposite" disciplines actually more similar than we realize? Alex Patrón is a freshman at University of Texas at Arlington, who is pursuing a major in Mechanical Engineering. In high school, he took rigorous engineering classes while also an active member of his theatre department at his Frisco, Texas Lebanon Trail High School. There, he served as the Head of the Properties Department for over a year. In that department, he served as Property Master for his Junior and Senior years for seven shows. He also dedicated his time and knowledge to five other productions. After earning his degree, he hopes to take his love of creation and theatrics and combine it with his expertise in engineering to apply his new ideas and talents to the Walt Disney Company as a Creative Engineer, or Imagineer. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
